Bambusina is a species from the green algae group of ornamental algae (Desmidiales) that occursin freshwater. It consists of a few types. In Central Europe only the species Bambusina brebissonii occurs.

features

The representatives form unbranched threads from a row of cells. The cells are short cylindrical and expanded to a ring in the middle. Its isthmus is shallow. The cell consists of two symmetrical, trapezoidal halves, the cell nucleus is central, in each cell half there is an axial chloroplast with a pyrenoid and longitudinal ridges. On the surface of the central ring are wart structures standing in rows. The growth occurs through cell division within the thread. One half of the cell wall is retained, the second half is formed again.

The asexual reproduction is done by thread growth. The threads disintegrate easily. The sexual reproduction is done by the zygnematophyceae characteristic conjugation . The zygotes are oval, their wall is smooth.

Occurrence

The representatives of the genus occur quite frequently in bog pools, in gullies and ditches of Sphagnum bogs.
