Bampton Castle was a moth near the village of Bampton in the English county of Devon . There was the seat of the barony of Bampton .

history

In Anglo-Saxon times, a mound was built on the site . The Normans built a wooden castle on it around 1067 to secure their land gains during the conquest of England after the Battle of Hastings in 1066. In 1136 this castle was besieged and burned down by the troops of King Stephen . Later a stone mansion was built on the Motte and in 1336 the then landlord, Richard Cogan , received a royal license for fortification (English: "License to Crenellate") and had it surrounded by a stone wall. It is believed that part of the building collapsed in an earthquake in 1607 . As a result, the stone buildings were removed, but the motte has been preserved as a clearly visible hill on the outskirts to this day.
