Ban Lum Khao
Ban Lum Khao ( Thai บ้าน หลุม ข้าว ) is an archaeological site on the Khorat plateau , in the province of Nakhon Ratchasima , Isan (northeast Thailand ).
Excavation history
In Ban Luma Khao there were several digs. One of the larger campaigns was carried out by Charles Higham and Rachanie Thosarat in 1994/95, about five kilometers west of Ban Prasat . An area measuring 14.5 meters by 10 meters was opened and 111 graves were discovered during the three months of excavation. They lie over a thin layer of settlement that is probably the first settlement in this area.
Finds
Remains of plants and animals as well as a lot of coal were found in many holes in the ground . According to the radiocarbon dating, this first phase of settlement lasted from around 1400 to 1000 BC. There were forests here and a river, the Mae Nam Mun (Mun River) , whose humid plains fed herds of water buffalo and provided many fish and shellfish as a food source. The people brought pigs, cattle and the dog. They hunted water buffalo and deer in the forest, which lasted until the Bronze Age . The graves described above date from this period, between 1000 and 500 BC. Although there are indications of the processing of bronze, no corresponding objects were found, but "exotic" pieces such as seashells, stone axes and marble ornaments. Clay jars up to 60 cm in diameter were also found in which the bones of newborns or young children were kept.
