Banda Singh Bahadur (born as Lachman Dev , born October 27, 1670 , † June 9, 1716 in Delhi ) was a leader of the rebellious Sikhs in the 18th century.

Life

Lachman Dev left home at the age of 15 to become a monk under the name Madho Das . He founded a monastery in Nanded on the banks of the Godavari River. In September 1708 he was visited by Guru Gobind Singh , who gave him the new name Banda Singh Bahadur . With the support of Gobind Singh, he gathered a force and led the Sikhs in the fight against the Mughal Empire under Bahadur Shah I. His death and the ensuing civil unrest in the Mughal Empire gave the Sikhs a respite. Under Mogul Farrukh Siyar , Banda Singh Bahadur was captured on December 7, 1715 during the siege of Gurdas Nangal and executed in Delhi on June 9, 1716 .
