Banff World Media Festival

The Banff World Media Festival (until 2010: Banff World Television Festival) is an international film and media festival and meeting of the television industry . It has been held annually in Banff , Canada since 1979 .

Under the name Banff World Television Awards, competitions are held in various categories among the submitted television productions from around the world. The winners will receive the Rockie Award, and Grand Prize Awards will also be given. Individual filmmakers receive the Special Achievement Awards Sir Peter Ustinov Comedy Award, Award of Excellence, Award of Distinction and Lifetime Achievement Award. In addition to the competitions, seminars are held on concepts, formats, film financing and sales, and other topics in the television industry. Every year around 1700 filmmakers and other specialist participants, mainly from television broadcasters from Canada, the USA, Europe and Asia, visit the festival. About 1000 television programs are presented.

The festival is not open to the general public. It is owned by the non-profit Banff Television Festival Foundation and is hosted by the Board of Trustees in conjunction with a private company. The foundation's mission is to “recognize, develop, celebrate and encourage excellence in television programming in Canada and around the world.” The foundation's board of directors is made up of executives from the media industry. The venue is the Banff Springs Hotel .

Since it was first held in 1979, the festival has been regarded as an internationally significant industry meeting with high standards, which, in contrast to other film festivals, provides a forum for the television industry. In 2010 it took place for the first time together with the festival for new media nextMedia.
