Bang Assu ( French Bang Assou or Bangassu ) was a sultanate of the Bandia - Nzakara in Central Africa.

The empire was founded in the late 18th century around what is now Bangassou, on the Mbomou River , which served as the capital. After the violent conquest by Belgian soldiers, Bang Assu was a protectorate of the Congo Free State , the private colony of King Leopold II of Belgium, from 1890 to 1894 .

On June 14, 1890, the Sultan of Bang Assou concluded an agreement with the Belgian captain Alphonse Vangeel , so that his empire became part of the Congo Free State Leopold II. As a result, Leopold's colony grew and he received large quantities of valuable ivory . In return, Sultan von Bang Assou received only 1,500 Belgian weapons for his armed forces.

The Belgian protectorate Bang Assou existed until 1894. After that, the area was transferred to the French colony of French Congo . Today it is part of Mbomou Prefecture within the Central African Republic .
