Bangai-O or Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaiō ( Japanese: 爆裂 無敵 バ ン ガ イ オ ー , German: "explosive, invincible Bangaiō") is a shoot 'em up with bullet-hell elements. It was released in autumn 1999 for the Nintendo 64 and shortly afterwards for Sega Dreamcast in Japan under its Japanese name. The Dreamcast version was later released worldwide under the name Bangai-O ; in Germany with the help of the publisher Swing Entertainment.

Gameplay

In a future about 200 years from now, a private space police under the aegis of Riki and his sister Mami fight smuggling in the Mech Bangaiō and respond to the shelling with gun violence. There are 44 levels to be successfully overcome.

Typically for bullet-hell shooters, the player is exposed to a superior force with hundreds of projectiles on the screen, which he can only counter with tactics, skill and the sensible use of extras .

Commercial win

According to the German video game magazine Total! only a few thousand pieces were sold. While it only appeared in Japan on the N64, the Dreamcast version saw a worldwide release.

Bangai-O HD: Missile Fury

The third part of the series was released on May 4, 2011 for Xbox 360 in the Marketplace.

The title received good reviews in the trade press, the enormous scope as well as the good control and the successful presentation were praised, whereby the sound was criticized as elevator music.
