Meløyvær Fortress, Gun B on Russøya (Meløyvær)

Meløyvær Fortress is a coastal fortress in Norway . It is located on the island of Krøttøya in the province of Troms og Finnmark . The fortress was of great strategic importance for NATO and Northern Norway during the Cold War . The building was the last fortress in Norway to be armed with three 120mm Bofors guns.

history

Meløyvær Fortress was built in the late 1980s to replace three other coastal fortresses between Andøya and Senja . Their main task was to stop attackers at the entrance to the Andfjord . Corresponding coastal artillery was also placed at the Nes fortress in Lødingen and Kråkvåg in the Trondheimfjord . Meløyvær Fortress was closed in 2002. The cannons were on the top floors of a 30 m deep bunker. Since the fortress is so new, all of the equipment, offices, bunks, control room and kitchen, etc., are still ready to use. The temperature and climate in the system are monitored to prevent damage to the device.

Guns

Meløyvær Fortress is the first Norwegian Cold War fortress to be listed in Norway. Originally it was armed with three 120 mm Bofors cannons, cannons A, B and C. Cannon A is still on Krøttøya and has been completely preserved. The command center is also completely preserved. Each cannon could fire 25 rounds per minute, at a distance of 17 miles.

The fortress has been a listed building since 2014. Guided tours are offered by the Sør-Troms Museum.
