The Bangunan Parlimen Malaysia or Malaysian Houses of Parliament is a complex of buildings that houses the two chambers of the Malaysian Parliament . The building complex is located at the Perdana Botanical Gardens , a large park in the capital Kuala Lumpur , right next to the Malaysian national monument .

description

The building complex consists of two parts, a three-story main building and a 17-story high-rise. The two chambers of Dewan Rakyat (House of Representatives) and Dewan Negara (Senate) are housed in the main building, while the offices of the representatives are located in the high-rise.

construction

The construction goes back to a proposal by Tunku Abdul Rahman , the first Prime Minister of the Malaya Federation , in December 1959. The design and execution of the building go back to the British Ivor Shipley, an employee of the Malaysian government building authority. The construction costs amounted to RM 18 million. Construction began in September 1962. The new parliament building was opened on November 21, 1963 by the 3rd Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Syed Putra Ibni Syed Hassan Jamalullail . A statue of Tunku Abdul Rahman was placed in the square in front of the Parliament.

Previous construction

From September 11, 1959 until the opening of the new parliament building in 1963, the parliament was housed in Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman . The building in the city center of Kuala Lumpur, near the Petronas Towers, originally belonged to the wealthy and renowned mining and plantation magnate Eu Tong Seng. Today the Malaysia Tourism Center (MATIC) is housed in this historic building .

Cultural reception

In Malaysia, the building has a high symbolic value. It also adorned the back of the first ringgit series of coins issued in 1967 and the back of the 1000 ringgit banknote from 1967 to 1996.

Move to Putrajaya

In 2010 the government brought up a new building in the government and administrative center Putrajaya . Due to the high cost of at least 800 million ringgit and protests from the population, the plan was not discussed further for the time being.
