history

The place Koviljača (in old Serbian "strengthening medicinal grass") was raised on August 1, 1898 by decree of the Serbian government to the royal bath with the name "Banja Koviljača" with the stipulation to build appropriate facilities and spa houses. These measures were essentially carried out between 1920 and 1930, delayed by the Balkan Wars and the First World War . Before this name the place was called “ Koviljkin grad ” and even before that it had been a sought-after healing place since the Roman era.

The city was the terminus of the narrow-gauge railway Šabac – Banja Koviljača . During the First World War, Banja Koviljača was the scene of major battles between Serbian and Austrian troops. After the end of the war, King Alexander I inaugurated a monument to the fallen soldiers on Mount Gučevo.
