The Banjarese language is a Malayo-Polynesian language and is the mother tongue of the Banjarese people of southern Borneo , Indonesia .

Since many Banjarese are traveling traders, they spread their language in many parts of Indonesia. Especially on the island of Borneo , the Banjaresische can be used as a lingua franca to be considered and the four provinces is mainly used in 3: South Borneo , Ostborneo and central Borneo , with the exception of West Borneo , where often the official language of Malaysia , the Malay is spoken. On the other hand, many Banjarese lose their mother tongue, since in the multiethnic state of Indonesia only Indonesian is the official language and minority languages have no freedom.

The language contains a large number of Malay and some Javanese cognates , but they usually have their own distinctive Banjar equivalents.

Classification and dialects

Although Banjarese, with its six million speakers, is widely considered to be "local Malay," studies have not even proven that the language is Malay at all. So far it has only been proven that there is an 80 percent probability that Banjarese is more closely related to Malay and the Iban language than to other Malayo-Sumbawan languages. It is likely that it is actually the language most different from Malay that was listed in the studies.

The Banjarese language is split into two main dialects: the upper course dialect (Hulu-Banjar language) and the lower course dialect (Kula-Banjar language).
