Banu (Arabic language)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Banu ( Arabic بنو, DMG banū ) is one of the plurals of the Arabic word Ibn ('son') and is mostly used as part of Arabic or Arabic tribal names in the sense of “sons of ...”.

In Arabic dialects or some other languages it is also spoken Bani , Benu or (in Morocco, for example) Beni . For example, Vietnamese Cham Muslims call themselves Bani Islam, or the Merinids are called Benimerinides in Spanish instead of Banu Marin .

The Arabic Banu corresponds to the Hebrew B'nai , such as B. in B'nai B'rith ('Sons of the Covenant'), but the "Sons of Israel" are also referred to as Beni Israel .
