history

At the site of the current building there was a predecessor chapel for the village, which was probably built in the 18th century and dedicated to St. Barbara . The building was first mentioned on May 8, 1738. This first chapel, which was ultimately used as a barn, no longer exists around the turn of the 19th century.

In 1807 a new chapel was built for Ippendorf. From 1859 the community was able to afford to finance its own pastor (Peter Wilhelm Tenten). Since 1862 there were plans to enlarge the too small, at that time still single-nave chapel. In 1866 the church construction began. For lack of financial resources, inferior building materials were used. The nave was lengthened by one meter (to the front) and a second nave was added in parallel. At the front, the chapel now had two pointed gables of the same height, bearing the date 1866. In addition, a slate-roofed tower with a bell was built, which had to be dismantled again in 1908 due to its dilapidation. The two naves were also in poor condition at the turn of the century. In 1908 the Catholic parish church of St. Barbara was also completed, in 1909 the Ippendorfer parish council sold the no longer needed chapel to the parish, which used it as a youth center and club house after a renovation. Local council meetings were later held in the chapel. When the parish church had to be renovated in 1962, the services were temporarily held again in the Barbara chapel. As a result, the chapel was unused and fell into disrepair. At the beginning of the 1990s, the building was completely refurbished and converted for residential purposes. Today the chapel room is used as the living room of the residential building behind it.

Originally a Crossroads with standing in front of the chapel Kreuztitulus , donor names and initials range from about the 1680s. It was destroyed by a truck in 1965. A replica can be found today at Saalestrasse 27. One of the four temporarily erected Ippendorfer blessing altars that were visited by the Corpus Christi procession with the holy of holies was located by the chapel .
