Barbara A. Schaal

Barbara Anna Schaal (* 1947 in Berlin) is an American evolutionary biologist of German descent. She teaches as a professor at Washington University in St. Louis .

She investigates processes such as gene flow , geographical differentiation and domestication of cultivated plants with the help of molecular genetic methods.

From 1995 to 1996 she was President of the Botanical Society of America (BSA). She has been with PCAST , the advisory body to the US President, since 2009 .

In 1999 she was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and in 2006 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 2017 she was President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
