Barbara Beyenka

Sister Barbara Beyenka (born April 20, 1911 in Houghton / Michigan ; † May 5, 2006 in Sinsinawa ) was an American theologian, translator and writer.

Beyenka attended Rosary College and entered the Dominican Order in 1934. She studied from 1936 to 1941 at the University of Wisconsin with a focus on Latin and Greek and from 1946 at the Catholic University of America , where she wrote a dissertation on Augustine . In 1954 she submitted a translation of the letters of the Church Father Ambrosius of Milan . In the same year she attended the American Academy in Rome as a Fulbright scholar .

Beyenke taught at various universities and colleges, from 1957 at Edgewood College in Madison, of which she became dean. Among other things, she published the volume of poetry Sea Scribe and Other Poems .
