Barbara Szüts
Barbara Szüts (* 1952 in Bad Bleiberg ) is an Austrian artist.
Life
Szüts was born in Bad Bleiberg in Carinthia in 1952 and grew up in Bad Ischl and Baden . From 1974 to 1980 she studied painting with Carl Unger at the University of Applied Arts Vienna . From 1986 to 2010 she lived, first in Hamburg, then in Cologne. From 2004 she was a lecturer at the Free Academy Cologne, responsible for fine art. Numerous works shape the cityscape of Cologne today. Since the end of 2010 she has moved her center of life and her studio back to Vienna.
Works
Szüt's artistic work includes sculpture, drawing, painting and light sculpture . In 1987 the first wall objects carved out of plastic were created in Cologne, which she called "epigrams". From 1998 she worked on the cycle of works for Johann Sebastian Bach's “Art of Fugue”. She spent 2001 as “artist in residence” at the Hotel Chelsea in Cologne, where she developed light sculptures from guest fingerprints and satellite images from space.
Her latest works are objects made of stainless steel or aluminum that appear scriptural and have titles such as “Mirroring”, “Overlay”, “Space” or “Nature”. In chalk or pencil drawings, the artist first "translates" lines of motion onto paper, then into sculptures. With the help of a computer program, the lines of the drawing are digitized and first printed out as small variants on paper, which they then process. Finally, the sculpture is removed using the same process using a laser or water jet. Their preferred materials are stainless steel and aluminum because they absorb the light and colors of the environment. Originally coming from the surface, the finished sculptures appear spatial and mobile, which can be enhanced by appropriate lighting or the arrangement of several objects one behind the other. They are designed both for the wall and as room installations and can be hung or placed as desired and thus create very different impressions. The artist attaches great importance to the lighting, which gives her works a different effect depending on where the light comes from and how the metal was polished.
