Barberstown Castle

Barberstown Castle ( Irish Caisleán Bhaile an Bharbaigh ) is a castle in the village of Straffan in County Kildare , Ireland , about 25 km west of Dublin . The castle, built in 1288, has been operated as a hotel since 1971 and is surrounded by 8 hectares of gardens. Renovation work in 1996 uncovered a previously undiscovered tunnel that connects the castle with the nearby Straffan Church and was believed to have been in use during the Penal Laws .

history

Nicholas Barby had the castle built on land owned by the FitzGerald family in 1288 . In 1630 the property belonged to William Sutton , a member of one of the most important families in the area.

In 1689, after the accession of King James II of England to the throne , Richard Talbot, 1st Earl of Tyrconnell , confiscated Barberstown Castle from Lord Kingston . It can then be owned by the Commissioners of the Revenue , who leased it to Roger Kelly at the end of the 17th century . At the turn of the century it went through a number of hands including that of Bartholomew Vanhomrigh , who bought it with 135 acres of land in 1703 for £ 1033. Vanhomrigh had been the Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1697 and was the father of Vanessa Vanhomrigh , Jonathan Swift's lover . He sold the castle to the Henrys , who had to sell it to Hugh Barton of the Barton and Guestier wine family due to financial need . He had the last wing of the house built in the 1830s.

In the 20th century, the Buddlestons sold it to Mrs. Norah Devlin , who had it converted into a hotel in 1971. Eric Clapton bought the property in 1979 and sold it back to the current owner, Ken Healy , who lives there in 1987 . Healy has had the 10 bed three bath guest house converted into a 59 room 4 star hotel recommended by Fáilte Ireland .
