Rahinnane Castle

Rahinnane Castle ( Irish Caisleán Ráthanáin ) is the ruin of a tower house about 1.7 km northwest of Ventry in the western part of the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland . The castle ruins are considered a national monument .

history

A ráth at this point was found in the 7th or 8th century BC. Built in BC. The Irish-Gaelic name was originally Ráth Fhionnáin , German: "Finans Ráth".

Local legend says that this piece of land was the last to be held by the Vikings because it was so easy to defend.

The stone Tower House was built in the 15th or 16th centuries for the FitzGeralds , who bore the hereditary title of Knights of Kerry .

In 1602, towards the end of the Nine Years' War , the castle was taken by troops led by Sir Charles Wilmot, 1st Viscount Wilmot . During the reconquest of Ireland (1649-1653) it was laid in ruins.
