Barilius is a genus of the Bärblings (Rasborinae). The freshwater fish are found in South Asia from Asia Minor to Southeast Asia , in China and Japan . As schooling fish, they mainly inhabit mountain streams, but also rivers in the plains.
features
Barilius species have a moderately elongated, laterally flattened body and reach a length of five to 30 cm. The mouth is large, the gap in the mouth is deep. The fangs stand in two to three rows. Barilius species can have up to two pairs of barbels (rarely one), or they can be without barbels. The fish are in most cases silvery colored with a dark pattern. The sideline , when complete, runs along the lower half of the body. The beginning of the dorsal fin lies behind the base of the pelvic fin . Of the rays of the dorsal fin, the first three are undivided, the third and longest imperforate. They mainly eat insects.
