The village formerly belonged to the monastery lordship of the Ahrensbök monastery and (after its dissolution) to the Ahrensbök office and was subject to the Ahrensbök suburbs . In 1735 the village was able to buy itself out of serfdom . In 1866 the Ahrensbök office - with the community of Süsel, to which Barkau belonged - went to the Principality of Lübeck .
