The Barkauer See is a lake in the municipality of Süsel - northeast of the village of Barkau / southeast of Gothendorf - in the Ostholstein district in Schleswig-Holstein .

It is located in Holstein Switzerland, surrounded by a hilly moraine landscape and is traversed by the Schwartau river in a southerly direction .

The lake has an irregular shape with a maximum length (in NE / SW direction) of approx. 1000 m. It has a size of about 48 ha and is very shallow with a maximum depth of about 1.6 meters and - due to the sediment input from the Schwartau - threatened with siltation.

The water from the Achtersee / Middelburger See flows into the north-eastern side of the Barkauer See .

The Barkauer See and the surrounding area was declared a nature reserve in 1982 - it is located away from the roads and can only be reached via dirt roads.

It is currently planned to enlarge the water area from 50 hectares to 70 hectares (which corresponds to the previous size of the lake, as large parts of it are silted up or overgrown with dense reeds).

It is partly fished.
