Barkauer See

The Barkauer See and the surrounding area is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein community of Süsel in the Ostholstein district .

The approximately 137  hectare nature reserve is entered with the number 32 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It was expelled in 1982 (date of regulation: November 11, 1982). The nature reserve is part of the 472 hectare FFH area "Barkauer See". The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Ostholstein district.

The nature reserve is located southeast of Eutin in the Holstein Switzerland Nature Park . It includes a part of a moraine landscape lying Schmelzwassertals the Schwartau with the lying therein Barkauer See , one traversed by the Schwartau shallow lake. The valley area was heavily drained in the 1930s and the Schwartau straightened in order to make the land usable for agriculture. After the protection was placed, the use of the areas was gradually extended or discontinued. Since 1987, the Schleswig-Holstein Nature Conservation Foundation has bought around 209 hectares as well as the ProNatur initiative with the Schleswig-Holstein State Hunting Association and the Eutin District Hunters' Association around 13 hectares of the formerly agricultural land in the nature reserve and adjacent to it. In 2006, the water level of the Barkauer See was increased by 40 cm through the installation of Sohlgleiten in the Schwartau and the damming of ditches in the lowland area, and a natural water balance was restored. The 50-hectare lake is by extensive Verlandungs zones with reed stocks and swamp forests surrounded. In places are grassland areas, partially managed as extensive grassland and partially wet grassland included in the protected area. Unforested fallow areas are occupied by herbaceous vegetation. Partial areas are mowed in the interests of nature conservation or extensively grazed with robust cattle such as Welsh Black or Galloways .

The nature reserve is characterized by a near-natural state with a species-rich fauna. So come here u. a. Crane , bittern , marsh harrier , corncrake , black-necked grebe , kingfisher , red-backed killer , black and whinchat , sprout , reed warbler and bearded tit . Sea eagles and ospreys use the area for foraging. The nature reserve is an important resting and wintering place for migratory birds , including the dwarf hawk , whooper swan and gadfly .

In addition to birds, the nature reserve offers a habitat for numerous other animals. In the Barkauer See there are over twenty species of mussels and snails , as well as various fish such as pike , eel , tench and mud whip . The nature reserve also offers suitable habitats for amphibians such as fire-bellied toad , water frog and moor frog. The European tree frog was reintroduced in 2008 as part of a project.

Large rattlespot and flesh-colored orchid grow in the nature reserve . In fracture forest zone grow alder and willow thickets as alder and gray and Crack Willow and marsh marigold , marsh iris and marsh fireweed . The reed zone is dominated by narrow-leaved cattails and reeds as well as common pond rush. Various aquatic plants can be found in the Barkauer See , including yellow pond rose and white water lily as well as comb spawn . The water hemlock could also be detected.

The nature reserve, which is surrounded by agricultural land , is looked after by the Schleswig-Holstein State Association of the German Nature Conservation Union . An expansion of the protected area is planned. To the east, a hiking trail runs along the edge of the nature reserve. A branch path leads to the Barkauer See.
