The Kasseedorfer Ponds and the surrounding area are a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein community of Kasseedorf in the Ostholstein district .

The approximately 132  hectare nature reserve is registered under number 170 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It was expelled in 1961 (date of regulation: August 22, 1996). The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Ostholstein district.

The nature reserve is located northwest of Neustadt in Holstein and northeast of Eutin in the east of the Holstein Switzerland Nature Park . It puts the mill and the Oberteich with bank areas, a former soil extraction area and the adjacent areas used for agriculture and forestry under protection. The area includes a diverse habitats in the Weichselian resulting Jungmoränen landscape. Thus ver moorte depressions , natural, predominantly wet forest areas , meadows and pastures , abandoned soil dissipation surfaces and other fallow land and by damming the Schwentine incurred as well as a stream ponds to find mill and upper pond and river.

The lowlands are partially peaty. The ponds are surrounded by reeds and swampy reeds as well as alder and willow bushes. The brook gorges with their springy slopes are also predominantly moist habitats. The humid habitats are home to birds such as the kingfisher and bittern , dragonflies such as the royal dragonfly as well as amphibians and reptiles such as crested newts , common frogs and grass snakes . The yellow iris grows here . Water lilies and pond roses are particularly found in the mill pond .

Lean and dry lawns and herbaceous vegetation develop on the dry hilltops and in the abandoned soil extraction areas . These are important for a wide variety of insects . The former soil extraction areas, in which gravel had been extracted over several decades , are left to their natural succession , so that forest areas will develop here in the long term.

Former arable land in the area of ​​the nature reserve has been converted to grassland in order to achieve a semi-open pasture landscape that is grazed extensively with cattle.

The nature reserve is a feeding area for the sea ​​eagle . The eagle owl is now also at home here again. Knicks and Redder offer u. a. the red backed a habitat.

The nature reserve is looked after by the Kasseedorf Nature Conservation Association. The European long-distance hiking trails E1 and E6 run through the area .

Kasseedorf gravel pit natural experience area

At the edge of the nature reserve, a little south of Kasseedorf, there is the Kasseedorf gravel pit nature experience area. The nature reserve Eule of the nature conservation association Kasseedorf with an information center is also located here.
