The Northern Lake Lower Fehmarn is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein city ​​of Fehmarn in the Ostholstein district .

The approximately 751  hectare nature reserve is registered under number 206 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry for Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It has been under protection since August 29, 2014. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Ostholstein district. The nature reserve is largely part of the FFH areas "Coastal Strip West and North Fehmarn" and "Sea Area of ​​the Eastern Bay of Kiel" and the EU bird sanctuary "Eastern Bay of Kiel". In the northeast it borders on the nature reserve " Grüner Brink " and in parts on the landscape protection area "Insel Fehmarn".

The nature reserve, which consists of three areas, is located in the north of the island of Fehmarn. It extends along the coastal region and is behind the dike lying lagoons and lakes with the surrounding surfaces, in the northwest area on Markelsdorfer Huk and the area of the southwest lying also ahead of the dike lagoons, lakes and also the adjacent shallow water of Baltic Sea under protection. The nature reserve is characterized by a compensation coast as a typical Baltic Sea coast landscape with beach walls and enclosed lagoons and inland lakes. The areas between the lagoons and lakes are primarily occupied by wet areas , salt marshes , flat coastal bogs and grassland areas . In the northwest and west of the nature reserve there are dune areas , gravel beaches and rinsing fringes (which are not part of the nature reserve in the areas adjoining them to the east). Here u. a. Sea kale . The white dunes are populated by beach grass. Furthermore, beach pea and beach Thistle find. Herbaceous vegetation grows on the dune areas that adjoin inland.

The nature reserve is a habitat and a. of marsh harrier , bittern , red-breasted merganser , teal , pochard , avocet , redshank , snipe , lapwing , Spotted Crake , minke and Tern and Sedge Warbler , all also breed here. As a resting area, it is important for greylag goose , whooper swan , tufted duck and golden plover . It is also a wintering area for various ducks . The nature reserve is also the habitat of crested newt and fire-bellied toad . It was part of the LIFE -Bombina project. The living conditions of the fire-bellied toad have been improved here. Even cross and toad are native here.

Parts of the nature reserve are grazed with robust cattle for care. They keep the landscape open and prevent the waters from silting up. The grassland areas are used extensively.

Several paths run through the nature reserve. a. the campsites east of the Markelsdorfer Huks , excursion restaurants and the beach sections located outside the dyke and not included in the nature reserve are accessible. There is an observation platform near the Markelsdorfer Huks. The nature reserve on the island of Fehmarn borders almost entirely on agricultural land .
