Wallnau / Fehmarn is a nature reserve in the west of the Baltic Sea island of Fehmarn . It was established in 1977 and is considered an important protected area for migrating birds .
geography
The Wallnau / Fehmarn nature reserve covers an area of around 297 hectares consisting of ponds, reeds and meadows as well as part of the Baltic Sea and the beach fringes. It is on the west coast of the island. To the east are the places Petersdorf and Kopendorf; Access by motor vehicle is from the northeastern village of Bojendorf .
Geological origin
The geological development of the area is closely linked to the history of the former Kopendorfer See, on the area of which large parts of today's Wallnau are located.
The Kopendorfer See was a shallow beach lake , which was separated from the Baltic Sea in the course of the formation of the coast after the last Ice Age in the course of the compensatory coastal formation . This process can still be observed today in the area of the Krummsteert south of Wallnau.
history
1866 to 1976
In 1866, the engineer and surveyor Gustav Kröhnke began to drain the Kopendorfer See . The name Wallnau was given to the resulting new district in 1871. Kröhnke built an agricultural estate with arable farming and cattle breeding. Due to the storm surge of 1872 , the dykes built as part of the drainage were destroyed again and Wallnau was flooded by sea water. In 1874 there was another flood, which finally forced Kröhnke to sell Wallnau.
The estate was acquired by two Hamburg spice dealers who wanted to grow herbs and farm animals in Wallnau. Around 1900 a pond was established there by building a dike and several intermediate dams, which was abandoned in 1963.
In 1976 the pond property and its areas were acquired by the German Association for the Protection of Birds - today the Nature Conservation Union of Germany (NABU) - and the Ostholstein district .
Designation as a nature reserve
On December 23, 1977 it was designated as a nature reserve under the number 89. In March 2010, NABU was given responsibility for three further protected areas on Fehmarn. This created a networked system of protected areas on Fehmarn. Two areas are located between the NSG Wallnau / Fehmarn and the NSG Krummsteert-Sulsdorfer Wiek / Fehmarn, which is also managed by NABU . The Fehmarn NSG Grüner Brink , the Spitzenorth peninsula and the islands in the Lemkenhafener Wiek , which u. a. house a large herring gull colony are also looked after by NABU. The latter two areas fall under the EU bird protection directive or are fauna-flora-habitat areas in the Europe-wide network of protected areas Natura 2000 .
Ecology, flora and fauna
Over 270 species of birds use the areas of the nature reserve as resting and resting places on their migration. Around 100 species breed in Wallnau, including rare bird species such as the red-necked grebe and the little tern . Galloway cattle whose meat is marketed by NABU are kept on the meadows of the NSG .
The NSG is operated by NABU under the name "NABU Wasservogelreservat Wallnau". Access to the NSG is only possible against payment of admission. Around 30,000 people visit the NSG every year. NABU employees perform the nature conservation service of Schleswig-Holstein. Since 2004 activities for amphibian protection have been carried out by NABU Wallnau. Natterjack toads and green toads are mapped in the areas .
The nature conservation center "Altes Gutshaus" in the NSG houses an exhibition on bird migration , a restaurant, seminar rooms and a shop. The seven full-time employees and up to 25 voluntary employees take care of nature conservation work and public relations work. The center is certified as a provider of educational offers for sustainable development .
The nature reserve can be viewed at any time from a path on the top of the summer dike . The NABU information center is open from March to October and also offers guided tours of the area.
