The Aalbeek lowland is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein communities of Timmendorfer Strand and Ratekau in the Ostholstein district .

The approximately 349  hectare nature reserve is registered under number 118 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry for Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment, Nature and Digitization . It was expelled in early 1985 (date of regulation: December 31, 1984). The nature reserve is also designated as a FFH area and an EU bird sanctuary "NSG Aalbeek-Niederung". The protection status as a bird sanctuary has existed since March 1992, the FFH area since January 2010. In the south and east it borders on the landscape protection area "Hemmelsdorfer See and surroundings". The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Ostholstein district.

The nature reserve is located south of Timmendorfer Strand. It puts the lowland area between Timmendorfer Strand and Hemmelsdorfer See under protection. The lowland was created by the silting up of the Hemmelsdorfer See, which was a post-glacial fjord of the Baltic Sea . Several rivers flow through it, including Aalbeek and Twerbek in the east of the nature reserve, which drain the Hemmelsdorfer See to the Baltic Sea.

The nature reserve is characterized by extensively used grassland . The grassland is divided by hedges and rows of trees, some with pollarded willows. In addition, there are woodland islands with small oak and hornbeam forests . Along the shores of the Hemmelsdorfer See as well as along Aalbeek and Twerbek, alder and ash break forests grow , along the two rivers, some with alluvial forest character. The north-eastern area of ​​the Hemmelsdorfer See is part of the nature reserve.

The lowland is only a little above sea ​​level and is very humid due to the nearby Baltic Sea and the Hemmelsdorfer See. Large areas of the area are flooded when the Baltic Sea floods and when the water from the Hemmelsdorfer See cannot drain over a longer period of time when the Baltic Sea water level is elevated. The grasslands are of great importance as a habitat for various meadow birds . In addition, together with the water bodies of the Hemmelsdorfer See, it is important as a resting and wintering area for many bird species.

On the shores of Lake Hemmelsdorfer a up to 50 meters wide extending reeds strips of reeds and Schmalblättrigem cattails , inland a narrow Bruchwald stripes on the predominantly black alder connects and various willow species. Downy birch , buckthorn and blackcurrant also grow in places . Large and small sedge etc. settle on the grassland areas. a. with roller and Carex paniculata , iris , marsh marigold , meadow buttercup , yellow meadow rue , bittersweet nightshade , bitter smock , loosestrife , loosestrife , Big Sorrel , Thelypteris palustris and many orchids , including Broad and Dactylorhiza incarnata .

The nature reserve is the habitat of a diverse insect flora. Mayflies and stoneflies and various mosquito species as Zuck- and Bach mosquitoes are common. The area is also an important habitat for dragonflies and various butterflies .

The reed areas are habitat u. a. of marsh harrier , bittern , throttle and Sedge Warbler and Savi . Furthermore, the kingfisher , red backed killer , golden oriole , horned swirl , carminer , bearded tit , potty tit and teal duck are native to the nature reserve . The white-tailed eagle uses the area as a feeding habitat. The water areas of the lake are Hemmelsdorfer during the bird migration resting area for Gray Goose , grebes , Gadwall , Spoon , Tableware , herons and scaup .

Several hiking trails run through the nature reserve. There is an observation tower near the north bank of the Hemmelsdorfer See , from which the nature reserve, the Hemmelsdorfer See and parts of the Lübeck Bay can be viewed. The nature reserve borders the federal highway 76 in the north . Otherwise it is mainly surrounded by agricultural land . In the northeast it borders on the Niendorf bird park and in the southeast on a golf course .
