The Niendorf bird park in Niendorf in the municipality of Timmendorfer Strand ( Ostholstein district in Schleswig-Holstein ) is a bird park with numerous domestic and exotic bird species .

With over 1000 birds from over 250 different species and an area of ​​7  ha (0.2 ha of which are aviaries ), it is one of the largest bird parks in Germany .

The bird park is also active in the offspring and rearing of young animals.

Livestock

The collection of owls with 150 animals from 47 species is the largest in the world. The collection of storks (with 15 species) is the largest in Europe . In addition, the Niendorf Bird Park is home to pelicans , parrots , birds of prey , vultures , toucans , pheasants , flamingos , cassowaries and numerous marsh and water birds (including cranes and herons ), which are located in the lowlands of the Aalbeek (connection Hemmelsdorfer See - Baltic Sea and flowed through by der Twerbek ) offers ideal living conditions.

history

The park was founded in 1973 and was taken over by its current manager in mid-1983, who found a new location for his extensive bird collection , which was previously located in Bad Schwartau .

The bird park was closed between February and May 2009; Due to EU regulations, the aviaries and winter quarters for the birds had to be enlarged and the number of animals reduced. The bird park has been open to the public again since May 8, 2009.
