Großkuchen has been a district of Heidenheim an der Brenz since 1974 . The mayor has been Josef Weber (FWV) since 1997.
history
The first written mention of Großkuchen is in the middle of the 8th century. At that time, Großkuchen belonged to the Fulda Monastery . Due to archaeological finds in the north of Großkuchen, however, Celts could already be settled in the 7th century BC. Be proven. A Roman settlement is documented between the 1st and 3rd centuries and there was an Alemannic colony in the 4th century .
In the 12th century, small cakes , next to large cakes , were mentioned, although both villages had largely the same owners. In 1935, Kleinkuchen became a sub-municipality of Großkuchen.
The town of Hubertsweiler , which has been occupied since the 13th century, was located on the Großkuchen district until 1890 .
In the High Middle Ages, Großkuchen went to the monasteries Ellwangen and Lorch as well as the Counts of Dillingen . In 1258, Großkuchen went to the Counts of Oettingen-Wallerstein and at the end of the 13th century to the Neresheim monastery , but without the village rule, which was finally transferred in 1764. In 1802, Großkuchen went to the Thurn und Taxis company , from 1806 to 1810 Großkuchen came to Bavaria and then finally went to Württemberg .
On July 1, 1974, the community Großkuchen (with the sub-communities Kleinkuchen , Nietheim and Rotensohl) was incorporated into Heidenheim an der Brenz .
On May 29, 2016, the Elvira low pressure area in Großkuchen suffered severe damage from hailstones the size of golf balls to houses, cars and garden inventory. Roads were covered with a layer of hail one centimeter thick and were difficult to pass. As an immediate aid, the Heidenheim district waste management company set up two containers free of charge to remove the damage caused by the hail.
Culture and sights
In 1736 the Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul was built in Großkuchen. There was a previous church since the middle of the 16th century. The style is late baroque . The frescoes and the Rococo pulpit are particularly worth seeing .
There is a charcoal burning plant on the connecting road between Rotensohl and Nietheim . The family business has been producing charcoal there in the sixth generation since 1816. The charcoal burning can be visited by those interested.
The Krätzental is expanded with hiking trails.

The Großkuchen elementary school is located on Rathausplatz. About 40 students are taught there. Evelin Städler-Schieszl has been the rector and thus the successor to Hans Beyrle since September 2013. After 20 years of service, Hans Beyrle retired on July 11, 2013.

For the federal election on September 24, 2017 , 1146 citizens in the Großkuchen constituency were eligible to vote. 704 citizens voted. There were 11 invalid first votes and 8 invalid second votes.

For the election of the local council on May 25, 2014 , 1261 citizens were eligible to vote. The members of the Free Voters' Association stood for election. The town council of Großkuchen could be chosen by the citizens from Großkuchen, Kleinkuchen, Rotensohl and Nietheim. 601 citizens voted. There were 2 invalid votes. The turnout was 47.66%.
State election
For the state elections in Baden-Württemberg in 2016 , 1,143 citizens were eligible to vote. 626 citizens cast their votes. 621 votes were valid. The turnout was 54.77%.

In Großkuchen there is the fruit and horticultural association , the Heidenheim volunteer fire brigade with the Großkuchen department, the SV Großkuchen 1967 sports club , the retirees 'and senior citizens' club e. V. , the Musikverein Großkuchen eV, the theater group and the choral society Frohsinn 1878.
The shooting club Schützenfreunde Großkuchen 1977 e. V. was dissolved in 2016.

- Johann Jakob Mettenleiter was born in Großkuchen in 1750 and died on February 25, 1825 at the Tsar's court in Saint Petersburg . There he worked as a court painter and museum director from 1786. He learned his trade from Johann Georg Zink and Martin Knoller.
- Johann Michael Mettenleiter (graphic designer) , the younger brother of Johann Jakob, was born in Großkuchen in 1765 and died on March 19, 1853 in Passau . He was court engraver and founding member of the Munich Art Association founded in 1823. A year later he was admitted to the Kgl. Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts.
- Johann Michael Mettenleiter (musician) was born in Großkuchen in 1791 and died on February 11, 1859 in Wallerstein . Since 1818 he worked for Ludwig (Oettingen-Wallerstein) as Kapellmeister, composer and lithographer . He was the uncle of Dominicus Mettenleiter and Johann Georg Mettenleiter .
- Johann Evangelist Mettenleiter was born in Großkuchen in 1792 as the son of a watchmaker and died on April 7, 1870 in Munich . He was the nephew of the graphic artist Johann Michael, with whom he studied. His best-known work was the textbook "Font Magazine for Friends of Calligraphy" which appeared in 1840.
- Inge Gräßle was born in Großkuchen in 1961. She is a German politician and MEP .
