Johann Jakob Mettenleiter
Johann Jakob Mettenleiter (born August 9, 1750 in Großkuchen, today a district of Heidenheim an der Brenz, † February 25, 1825 in Gatchina near St. Petersburg) was a painter , draftsman and etcher .
The son of a school teacher and watchmaker received his first training from the painter Johann Georg Zink from Neresheim and the painter Urban in Schwäbisch Gmünd . The stay of the painter Martin Knoller in the nearby Neresheim enabled him to come into contact with a more important artist. Via Stuttgart he got to Mannheim and Speyer. From there he moved to Amsterdam, where he was recruited as a soldier for the Dutch Cape Colony. In Cape Town he succeeded in making a small fortune with his art, which enabled him to buy his way out of further military service and to return to Amsterdam.
From there he traveled to Italy via his homeland in 1775 together with his ten-year-old brother Johann Michael Mettenleiter for a year. From there, his path took him via Munich to Augsburg, where he married and settled. Further trips took him once more to Amsterdam, Vienna and in 1786 to Petersburg, where he finally stayed permanently. There he also worked as a fresco painter in the design of various buildings of the imperial family.
