Life
Johann Georg Mettenleiter was the son of an elementary school teacher. At the age of twelve he came to Wallerstein to his uncle Johann Michael Mettenleiter, who held the position of a princely Wallerstein secretary and choir regent. Here he was taught Latin and French, as well as drawing and music. In 1836 he was accepted at the royal school teacher seminar in Bamberg . He broke off his training in the first year. In 1837 he took over the office of choir regent at the parish church in Oettingen im Ries .
In 1839 Mettenleiter was appointed choir regent and organist at the collegiate church of the old chapel in Regensburg . He worked there until his death. He was also active as a composer. In Regensburg, the bishop Karl August von Reisach and the canon Carl Proske became aware of him, who encouraged him to publish the Enchiridion Chorale , a collection of Gregorian chants , and to reform church music.
The clergyman, church musician and music writer Dominicus Mettenleiter was his brother.
