Carl Janelli

Carl Joseph Janelli (born July 14, 1927 in Brooklyn ; † December 3, 2018 in Oceanside ) was an American jazz musician ( baritone and tenor saxophone , clarinet ).

Live and act

Janelli, who came from an immigrant family, began playing the clarinet at the age of 13 after seeing the instrument at the 1939 World's Fair . During the Second World War he served in the US Army; he played in the 389th Army Service Forces Band in 1946. In the post-war era, he performed in well-known New York venues such as the Paramount Theater, Basin Street East, Carnegie Hall , Copacabana and the Empire Room of the Pennsylvania Hotel (with Tommy Dorsey ) and Birdland . I.a. he played with Neal Hefti , in the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra and in the TV shows of Johnny Richards and Jackie Gleason ; he has also worked as an accompanist for vocalists such as Frank Sinatra , Tony Bennett , Barbra Streisand , Peggy Lee , Stevie Wonder , Sammy Davis Jr. and Natalie Cole . He also worked as a theater musician in Broadway musicals such as How to Succeed in Business , Purlie, Grease , Hello, Dolly! and Here's Love.

In the field of modern jazz , Janelli worked with Al Cohn , Phil Woods , Clark Terry and Al Haig . According to Tom Lord , he was involved in three recording sessions in the field of jazz between 1953 and 1957, with Les and Larry Elgart and with John Plonsky ( Cool Man Cool and Dixie Goes Progressive , with Urbie Green , Bill Barber , Tony Aless , Don Arnone, Jack Zimmerman, Mel Zelnick ). Further recordings were made with Lee Castle & The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra (Play The Big Band Beatles Bag!). From 1981 to 1990 he interrupted his musician career to work as managing director of the local musicians' union Local 802. From 1990 he retired in Oceanside (California).
