The Aalbek , sometimes also Aalbeek , is a river in the municipalities of Ratekau and Timmendorfer Strand in the Ostholstein district in Schleswig-Holstein .
It drains the Ruppersdorfer See , located northeast of Ratekau, to the east. After about 2 km it reaches the southwestern part of the Hemmelsdorfer See , which it leaves at its northern end together with the Twerbek (also called Querbek), which runs parallel to the east. Aalbek and Twerbek unite after about 1500 m ( ⊙ ). The remains of Gosevelde Castle are located around 550 m east of the Aalbek and 200 m east of the Twerbek . After another 2 km the Aalbek flows into the Baltic Sea on the western outskirts of Niendorf . At its mouth is the Niendorf harbor .
The Aalbek runs between the Hemmelsdorfer See and Timmendorfer Strand through the " Aalbeek-Niederung " nature reserve between the lake and the Baltic Sea resorts of Timmendorfer Strand and Niendorf . In the lowland, which on average is only 0.3 m above sea level. NN is a silting lowland of a former fjord formed after the last glacial period ( Weichsel ice age ) .
Several hiking trails lead through the valley, including from the parking lot of the nearby Niendorf bird park . Near the lakefront is the Hermann-Lons-view ( ⊙ ), an observation tower, which offers visitors a panoramic view of the countryside.
