The Ruppersdorfer See is approx. 25 hectares in size and very shallow with a depth of 1 to 2.5 m. In 1999 it was designated as a nature reserve Ruppersdorfer See with its bank areas and some adjoining areas because it is important for breeding and moulting , as a source of food and as a resting place for around 60 species of birds.
The Ruppersdorfer See drains (over the Aalbek ) northeast into the nearby Hemmelsdorfer See .
fauna
The black-necked grebes, mallards, tufted ducks, gypsies, black-headed gulls, common terns and gray herons breed regularly on the lake.

History and regeneration
The Ruppersdorfer See had a size of approx. 45 hectares until the 19th century , when it was drained for the production of grassland. Even before that, over the centuries the lake had become increasingly peaty and silted up.
From the 1980s, the area of the former lake was bought up by the Ratekau community , supported by the state of Schleswig-Holstein and third parties. From 1989 the lake was dammed again until it regained its present size in 1992.
Remains of a castle
On the eastern edge of the Ruppersdorfer See there is an island on which the remains of a medieval castle (a motte ) from the 12th / 13th centuries are located. Century. Remains of the tower hill 55 m long and 30 m wide as well as the remains of two ditches in the northeast and the remains of a ditch in the southwest.
At the time the castle was built, the lake at the site of today's island was only moored.
