Barmenia House (Hanover)
The Barmenia House in Hanover is a building erected for the Barmenia Insurance with the Good Samaritan as a total work of art in the center of the Lower Saxony state capital. The location is Schmiedestrasse 4 at the corner of Grupenstrasse in Hanover's Mitte district .
History and description
The building was erected in 1958 for the Barmenia insurance company based on plans by the architect Karl-Heinz Lorey . A bronze sculpture by the sculptor Hermann Scheuertstuhl, which was six years older than that, was to be used as architectural decoration on the façade : In 1952, Schäufstuhl designed the figures of the Good Samaritan and those in need of protection in the very typical way as larger-than-life, both fully plastic and flat sculptures. similar to how the artist put it with his bronze high relief "Doctor and Patient" at the former Linden Dermatology Clinic and - perhaps as the best of the group - "Music and Drama" in the auditorium of the Leibniz School on Röntgenstrasse.
Lorey cleverly staged the 2.2-meter-high building sculpture on a smooth, apparently lively loosened risalit , the natural stone facade of which is made of colored anodized panels and, thanks to the smooth, symmetrically arranged grain, forms a successful background for Schubbeche's work of art.
