The Barnard Point is a cape on the south coast of Livingston Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It limits the entrance to False Bay to the southeast .
The cape has been known since at least 1822, but its name does not appear on maps of Livingston Island until a century later. It is probably named after the nearby Mount Barnard (now known as Mount Friesland ). Its namesake is the American navigator Charles H. Barnard (1781-1840), captain of the sealer Charity of New York, which operated off the South Shetland Islands from 1820 to 1821 .
