Mount Friesland ( Spanish Monte Barnard ) is the highest mountain on Livingston Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It is located about five kilometers northeast of False Bay in the Tangra Mountains .

The mountain had been known to the seal hunters since 1820. In the middle of the 19th century the name Barnard Peak , which James Weddell had used for the 370 m high Needle Peak , was mistakenly transferred to it. Since 1959 ( Great Britain ) and 1960 ( USA ) it has had its original name again in the English-speaking world , while Chile and Argentina retained the name Monte Barnard .

On September 15, 1976, a Lockheed P-2 Neptune of the Argentine Navy crashed into the north flank of the mountain. The 11 crew members were killed in the accident.

The first ascent of Mount Friesland was achieved by the Catalan mountaineers Francesc Sàbat and Jorge Enrique on December 30, 1991. They were followed in 2003 by an Australian-Chilean group consisting of Damien Gildea, John Bath, Fica Perez and Osvaldo Usaj, who ascertained the height of Mount Friesland using GPS dated exactly 1700 m. Earlier measurements had shown an altitude between 1650 and 1780 m. In 2004 Lyubomir Ivanov and Doichin Vasilyev of the 13th Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition climbed the summit. The Bulgarian mountaineers Doitschin Bojanow and Nikolai Petkow climbed Mount Friesland in December 2016 and determined a height of 1693 m by DGPS , but 1699 m for the neighboring St. Boris Peak , so that this may be the highest peak on Livingston Island.
