Baron Grimthorpe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Baron Grimthorpe , of Grimthorpe in the East Riding of the County of York , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

The family seat of the barons is Westow Hall in York .

Award

The title was created on February 16, 1886 for the lawyer and architect Sir Edmund Beckett, 5th Baronet . Since he was childless, the award was made with the special addition that in the absence of his own male descendants, the title could also be inherited by the other male descendants of his father. As early as 1874 he had inherited from his father the subordinate title of 5th Baronet , of Leeds in the County of York and of Somerby Park in the Parish of Gainsborough in the County of Lincoln , which had been bestowed on his grandfather on November 2, 1813 .

On his death on April 29, 1905, his titles fell to his nephew as 2nd baron according to the special addition. Today's title holder has been his great-grandson Edward Beckett as 5th Baron since 2003 .
