Life

Karl Baron, who was only called Baron Karl by everyone, was a well-known Viennese original. He was particularly well respected in his home district of Favoriten , even though he was actually a so-called "sandler", a homeless tramp. He became particularly famous in the interwar period and after the Second World War . Numerous anecdotes and stories about him make it difficult to distinguish actual from invented. He is said to have had a strong sense of social compassion. Baron Karl died in a traffic accident when he was run over by a car in 1948. He was first buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery. Thousands of people are said to have been present at his funeral. Since 1995 his grave has been in the Matzleinsdorf Evangelical Cemetery (Group 15, No. 238), which is looked after and cared for.

effect

Based on oral traditions, the author Peter Henisch made Baron Karl the hero of one of his books. In 1995 the Baron-Karl-Gasse in Favoriten was named after him.
