Thomas Manners-Sutton, 1st Baron Manners

Baron Manners is a hereditary British title of nobility , which was awarded once in the Peerage of England and in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Award

The title was created for the first time on October 26, 1309 in the Peerage of England for Sir Baldwin de Manners , when he was summoned to the royal parliament in York via Writ of Summons . Baldwin was a knight well-to-do in Cambridgeshire and Norfolk and since mid-1309 royal constable of Rockingham Castle . When the location of the planned parliamentary session was moved to Westminster soon afterwards , Baldwin was missing from the list of those convened for reasons unknown. The title expired on his childless death on July 9, 1320.

In the second bestowal on April 20, 1807 by Letters Patent in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, the title of Baron Manners , of Foston in the County of Lincoln , was bestowed on the jurist and politician Sir Thomas Manners-Sutton , on the occasion of his appointment as Lord Chancellor of Ireland . Today's title holder has been his descendant John Manners as 6th Baron since 2008 .
