Earl Spencer is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Great Britain .

The Earls family seat is in Althorp , Northamptonshire ; the former London residence, Spencer House , is now rented.

The title was bestowed on November 1, 1765, to John Spencer, 1st Viscount Spencer . His father, the Hon. John Spencer, was the younger son of Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl of Sunderland , and Lady Anne Churchill, a daughter of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough , and brother of Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough . Together with the Earldom he was given the subordinate title Viscount Althorp , of Althorp in the County of Northampton . As early as April 3, 1761, he had been raised to Viscount Spencer and Baron Spencer of Althorp , of Althorp in the County of Northampton. The later 6th Earl was awarded the title Viscount Althorp , of Great Brington in the County of Northampton on December 19, 1905 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

The eldest son of the respective earl carries the courtesy title Viscount Althorp as his title heir .

A daughter of the eighth earl was Diana, Princess of Wales . Today's title holder is their brother Charles Spencer as 9th Earl.

The heir ( Heir apparent ) is the son of the current Earl, Louis Frederick John Spencer, Viscount Althorp (* 1994).
