Charles Edward Maurice Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer (born May 20, 1964 ) is a British nobleman and journalist. He is the younger brother of Princess Diana of Wales, who died in 1997 .

Origin and education

Charles Spencer is the youngest child and only surviving son of John Spencer, 8th Earl Spencer, and his wife Frances Roche . After the death of his grandfather in 1975, he carried the courtesy title Viscount Althorp . From 1977 to 1979 he was the honorary page of Queen Elisabeth II , his godmother. Spencer attended Maidwell Hall , a public school in Northamptonshire, and then Eton College . He then studied at Magdalen College , Oxford.

Activity as a journalist and author

From 1987 Spencer worked as a journalist for NBC News , from 1991 for Granada Television and from 1993 again for NBC News. From 1995 to 1996 he was the presenter on NBC Super Channel . From 1998 to 2000 he wrote as a journalist for the BBC television series Planet Wild . He has been working as a freelance journalist since 2001. Among other things, he published several books dealing with the history of his family.

After his father's death in 1992 Spencer had the title Earl Spencer and subordinate related titles, as well as the family home Althorp inherited km to the 52 2 estate in Northamptonshire, Warwickshire and Norfolk are, further, the Spencer House in London. As a peer, he was a member of the House of Lords from 1992 until he lost his inherited seat with the reform of the House of Lords in 1999 . He has been Deputy Lieutenant of Northamptonshire since 2005 .

As a patron and in other functions, he supports numerous non-profit organizations around the world. His sister Diana, who died in 1997, was buried in Althorp Park, and he gave the funeral oration at her funeral service in Westminster Abbey. Since 1998 there have been several exhibitions about Diana in Althorp.

Marriages and families

In 1989, Spencer's first marriage was Victoria Lockwood, a daughter of John Lockwood . With her he has a son and three daughters:

The marriage ended in divorce in 1997. In 2001 Spencer married the divorced Caroline Freud in 2001. With her he has a son and a daughter:
