The Barranca del Cobre (dt. "Copper Canyon", Eng. Copper Canyon ) is a in the Mexican state of Chihuahua located mountain range of the Sierra Madre Occidental , which was created by former strong river and partly on one of Tarahumara is -Indianern populated area. The canyon system, covering around 25,000 km², up to 1800 m deep and 50 km long, is one of the largest in North America and four times the size of the Grand Canyon . The name Kupferschlucht derives from the copper-colored canyon rock , piedra cobriza, from and at the same time designates a canyon contained in the system .

The Barranca del Cobre is part of the traditional habitat of the indigenous people of the Tarahumara (also Rarámuri ). The elaborately built “ Chepe ” railway , which leads from Los Mochis to Chihuahua , winds its way through the entire Barranca del Cobre , up the mountains to places from which one can cast far-reaching views of the gorge area. The places Creel and Guachochi are good starting points to reach the various gorges.
