Barren Island ( Spanish : Isla Pelada ) is one of the Falkland Islands . The island is southwest of East Falkland and southeast of George Island . It is partially used as pasture for sheep from George Island .

The island is known for its bird colonies , including those of the Dominican gull , the giant petrel , the Magellangan, and the gentoo penguin . It is therefore used by cruise ships from time to time . Together with the other islands of the Speedwell Group , it is designated by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area (FK16).
