High Falls on the Barron River |
The Barron River is a river in northern Algonquin Provincial Park in eastern Ontario , Canada .
It is a southern tributary of the Petawawa River . The Barron River leaves Stratton Lake near Achray Campground and flows into the Petawawa River near the town of Petawawa .
About 10,000 years ago, the Barron River formed a major drain of glacial meltwater in this region. It is believed to be the outflow of the historic Lake Agassiz for a short period of time . The 100 m deep Barron Canyon was formed during this time. The rocks that emerge in the canyon are part of the Canadian Shield . A popular canoe tour runs through the canyon. A hiking trail leads to the edge of the gorge.
The Barron River flows through a fault zone of the Ottawa-Bonnechere Trench .
There are several waterfalls along the river, including the Brigham Chute and the High Falls .
The river was an important transport route in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its water volumes were regulated for the purpose of timber rafting .
