Barry Chevannes

Alston Barrington "Barry" Chevannes (* around 1940 in Kingston ; † November 5, 2010 ibid) was a Jamaican sociologist and social anthropologist .

Life

Chevannes first attended St George's College, then went to Boston College in the USA, where he earned a Bachelor (BA) and Master of Arts (MA) in philosophy . He then studied sociology at the University of the West Indies (UWI), devoting particular attention to the study of Afro-Caribbean culture and religion and early scientific research into the social effects of ganja in Jamaica, and earned a master's degree. He received his PhD from Columbia University on the Rastafarian movement in Jamaica.

He taught at UWI as a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer , eventually as Professor of Social Anthropology . He was temporarily head of the department for Sociology, Social Work and Psychology at UWI and was Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences from 1994 to 2004 . In addition to Caribbean culture and religion, he researched, among other things, family relationships, the effects of crime and violence, and socio-political movements.

In addition to his academic work, Chevannes was involved in society, for example as a founding member of Partners for Peace and Fathers Incorporated , an organization that supports fathers and young men. Chevannes was Chairman of the National Commission on Ganja in 2000 and 2001 , which published the National Report on Ganja Use . He also participated in the Ministry of National Security's Peace Management Initiative . He was chairman of the Institute of Jamaica , which awards the Musgrave Medal .

Chevannes was married and had two children. He died on November 5th, 2010 in the University Hospital of the UWI.
