Musgrave medal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Musgrave medal (Musgrave medal) is the highest honor awarded by the Institute of Jamaica . It is awarded annually for special merits in the field of literature, art and science.

history

The Musgrave Medals have been awarded since 1897 and bear the name of the institute's founder , Sir Anthony Musgrave , a former governor of Jamaica. After Musgrave's death in 1888, the Assembly of Governors decided to present this award annually. The British sculptor Alfred Toft designed the medal. Between 1897 and 1906 the award was only given for arts and crafts. Silver and bronze Musgrave medals have been awarded since 1897, and the first gold medal in 1941. It went to Edna Manley for her contributions to the advancement of art and literature. The Musgrave Gold Medal is awarded as an award for outstanding service in literature, art and science in the West Indies , but was mostly given to Jamaican personalities.

Recipients of the Musgrave Medal are recognized for their longstanding service in promoting reform and change. The nominated person is therefore always related to the influence and inspiration of broad social classes. The winners of the award are announced annually in October.
