Orlando Patterson
Orlando Patterson (born June 5, 1940 in Westmoreland , Jamaica ) is a Jamaican -American sociologist and author. His book Freedom, Volume One, or Freedom in the Making of Western Culture won the US National Book Award (non-fiction).
Life and education
Patterson grew up in May Pen . He initially studied at Kingston College and graduated in 1962 from the University of the West Indies ( University of London ) as a B.Sc. in economics . He received his PhD in sociology from the London School of Economics in 1965.
Career
In 1967 he became a professor at the University of the West Indies. In 1969 he moved to Harvard University , where he has been working ever since. He is the John Cowles Professor of Sociology . From 1972 to 1980 he was special advisor to Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manley .
In his work, he focuses on the connection between slavery and social death , the culture of freedom and the cultural sociology of poverty and underdevelopment with special attention to the Caribbean and Afro-American youth. He also dealt with the cultural sociology of sport and wrote in particular on cricket .
In addition to non-fiction books, Patterson also published three novels. He has written guest columns for the New York Times , Washington Post , Time, and Newsweek .
