Barry Jones, Baron Jones

Stephen Barry Jones, Baron Jones , PC (born June 26, 1938 ) is a British Labor politician .

Youth and education

Jones went to Hawarden Grammar School and Bangor College of Education . He became a teacher and was president of the National Union of Teachers in Flint County . He completed two years of military service in the Royal Welsh Regiment of Fusiliers .

Political career

Jones ran unsuccessfully in Northwich constituency in 1966 and became a Member of Parliament in East Flintshire constituency in 1970 ; he held the seat until 1983.

From 1974 to 1979 he was Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Wales and in 1983 took over the parliamentary seat for the constituency of Alyn and Deeside .

In 1994 Jones was appointed by the Prime Minister to serve on the Intelligence and Security Committee , which he served until 2001 when the committee was dissolved.

He did not run for the 2001 general election, his successor in the parliamentary seat was Mark Tami . Instead, he was promoted to Life Peer on July 6, 2001 as Baron Jones , of Deeside in the County of Clwyd, and has been a member of the House of Lords ever since .

Further positions

In 2007 he was elected President of Glyndŵr University in Wales.

Personal

Jones has been a fan of Everton FC since he was a teenager .

He is married to Janet Davies.
