The Barry Mill is a watermill near the Scottish town of Barry in the Council Area Angus . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 2009.

history

The land belonged to the property of Balmerino Abbey in 1229 . The Cistercian monks set up a mill on the site in 1539 at the latest. After the Scottish Reformation with the expropriation of the monasteries, Robert Gardyne acquired the mill in 1683. Until 1811 it was inherited within the family. Around 1814 a fire devastated the mill. Today's mill is a new building from this time. In the course of the 1930s and 1940s, various renovations and extensions were carried out. The mill was in operation until 1982, producing oatmeal and flour. In 1988 the National Trust for Scotland took over the Barry Mill and restored it until 1992. Today it is the only functioning watermill in Angus. It can be visited.

description

The Barry Mill stands on the Barry Burn creek a few hundred meters north of Barry or northwest of Carnoustie . In terms of their structure, there are parallels to the Mill of Benholm in the neighboring Council Area Aberdeenshire . Its masonry is made of roughly hewn red sandstone . The three-story building has an irregular, roughly L-shaped floor plan. The associated kiln is half-round, typical of the region. A mill canal branched off from the Barry Burn supplies the overshot water wheel , which is installed in a separate building. The wheel of the Douglas Foundry from Dundee , probably made around 1881, measures 4.7 meters in diameter. 30 hanging buckets drive it. The driven mechanism is made of beech wood. The roofs of the Barry Mill are covered with slate.
