Mill of Benholm

The Mill of Benholm is a watermill in the Scottish village of Benholm in the Council Area Aberdeenshire . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 2009.

history

Mills can be found on the site until the 12th century. The Mill of Benholm was built around 1711. In 1817 it was revised and partially rebuilt. At this time the kiln was also added. Lindsay Watson leased the mill in 1929 and ran it until his death in 1951. His son of the same name bought the Mill of Benholm and ran it commercially until 1982. The kiln in particular was busy. With the decline in demand for oatmeal, Watson also produced animal feed. The Kincardine and Deeside district acquired the Mill of Benholm in 1986 and had it restored until 1995. Since then it has been open to visitors as a museum mill.

The book Sunset Song (German: Das Lied vom Abendrot ) by the regional writer Lewis Grassic Gibbon was first implemented in a television series by the BBC in 1971 . The scenes at Long Robs Mill were filmed at the Mill of Benholm.

description

The Mill of Benholm is located at the confluence of the Burn of Benholm and Castle Burn rivers on the eastern edge of today's hamlet of Benholm, not far from the Benholm Parish Church . With regard to the structure, there are parallels to the Barry Mill in the neighboring Council Area Angus . The small mill, which is in an unusually good state of preservation, consists of one to two-story buildings. Their masonry consists of roughly hewn quarry stone . They close with slate roofs . The Castle Burn is dammed up at the level of the mill and passed through a weir into a short mill canal. In this an overshot water wheel is driven. The iron wheel with wooden shovels is 3.7 m in diameter.
